Check out this article from last November for an overview of the “Downloadables” collection from Austin Public Library.
The combination of the following three elements, you can rent eBooks* for free, with electronic delivery straight to your child’s iPad!**
Step 1. Download the Kindle app onto your child’s iPad. Register the Kindle app by entering your Amazon.com account information upon prompting the first time you open the app.
Step 2. Enter the information from your library card here. (If you need to create a PIN, you can do so here.)
Step 2. Browse/search for eBooks.
Step 3. Upon checkout, sign in to your Amazon account by clicking the Get library book button, and select the option to have it delivered to iPad.
* Sadly, even though text-to-speech is available on some Kindle devices, it is not available on the Kindle app for Apple devices. For advice on how advocate for the availability of that feature, check out this article.
** A similar process is possible to obtain eAudiobooks through the OverDrive app, but there are reports of various malfunctions since the upgrade to iOS 6, so I will wait until those kinks have been worked out before recommending that.
